1.    He cannot be My disciple: Jesus clearly spoke about the kind of person who could not be His ________. The word disciple simply means “learner.” A disciple is someone who is a _________, a learner of Jesus.

2.    And does not hate: Repeatedly in the Bible we see that Jesus founded a way of love, not hate. Yet Jesus used the strong word hate to show how great the difference must be between our __________ to Jesus and our __________ to everyone and everything else.

3.    Bear his cross and come after Me: Here Jesus said to the great multitudes something very similar to what He said privately to all His disciples in Luke 9:23 – that being a _________ of Jesus is something like _________ a cross.

4.    “The general idea that these words of Jesus about bearing the cross refer to passive submission to all kinds of afflictions, like disappointments, pain, sickness and grief that come upon man in life, is totally wrong… only a person who for the sake of His service __________ all self-seeking and abandons all striving after his own __________ can be His disciple.” (Geldenhuys)

5.    Cannot be My disciple: Jesus made it clear that only cross-bearers can be His disciples. Therefore, we sometimes may __________ the demands of Jesus when we present the gospel. We can give them the impression that coming to Jesus is only to believe some facts instead of to _____ a life.

6.    Jesus perhaps alluded to the idea that the work of His kingdom was like ________ and _______. Each of these are usually more costly than one thinks before beginning.

8.    Drew near to Him to hear Him: They did not necessarily give Jesus their trusting love and allegiance immediately; but they did want to hear more. _______ and ________ saw the love prompting the bold call to discipleship, and they responded.

9.    “A great Jewish scholar has admitted that this is the one absolutely new ______ which Jesus taught men about God – that he actually ________ for men.” (Barclay)

10.    Light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully: The woman in the story first brought ______; then swept and _________ the house, all along searching for the coin carefully and with deliberate intent. She kept looking until she ______ the coin.

11.    The father clearly illustrates God’s _____. His love allowed rebellion and, in some sense, respected human will. The father knew that the son made a foolish and greedy request, yet ________ him to go his course nonetheless.

12.    “I have sinned against heaven and before you” shows a complete ________ of thinking. He didn’t think like this before; now he made no attempt to _______ or excuse his sin.
